Title Using Internet-based experiments to study conditions for Web-based surveying
Year 2005
Access date 24.10.2005
Abstract The Internet, particularly the World Wide Web, has been used as a setting for experimental research for more than ten years. As a general method, experiments allow the researcher to actively set conditions and therefore gain a better understanding of causal relationships. Experiments on the Internet encompass many of the advantages known from Web surveying, with additional ones that are specific to the experimental method. It is argued that Internet-based experiments are the method of choice for the systematic study of conditions for Web-based surveying. A recent trend in Web experimenting has been research on procedures and conditions of online research, such as the influence of personalization, social desirability, information about incentives, use of Javascript and other specific technologies, or gathering of personal information on drop-out in Web-based studies. These types of Web experiments provide part of a frame of reference for standards in online research. Another piece of the frame has been the development and evaluation of several Internet research techniques, such as the multiple site entry technique, custom randomized response techniques, the high hurdle technique, and experimental designs for dropout analysis.  These techniques and other detailed solutions will be briefly described.
